[7.40c] The 5 Best Mid Lane Heroes in Dota 2
February 11th, 2026

In DOTA2 version 7.40c, the probability of being assigned to the mid lane is increasing, especially since the offlane no longer requires a ticket. The current version has low assist rewards, making early and mid-game ganking less cost-effective, and lane-dominating farming heroes are stronger. Supports have limited economic sources in the early and mid-game, so core heroes should actively let kills to supports. Start actively pushing lanes from the 5th minute, avoid being killed, and improve farming speed. Here are the five strongest mid lane heroes and their latest playstyles:
Fifth Place: Loading...
Since the 7.40 update, Loading... has been one of the most popular mid lane heroes, almost the only viable rhythm-type mid. The 7.40C update slightly reduced the damage of Loading..., which is not a big impact. In terms of gameplay, choose Chain Gang for Facets, main Loading..., and use Loading... to tether enemies and remote creeps for quick kills during laning phase, pushing lanes to reduce unnecessary consumption. Loading... is at a disadvantage against almost everyone in today's meta, except Loading.... However, Loading... doesn't require too much equipment; as long as the level doesn't fall behind, getting an Loading... is enough to be effective, and its combat power in the first 20 minutes is very sufficient. This is why Loading... is still popular in competitions and high-ranked games, and is not afraid of being targeted even if picked early.
Fourth Place: Loading...
The most popular mid lane heroes in the current version are lane-dominating farming heroes, and Loading... is picked to prevent the opponent's lane-dominating heroes from controlling the lane. There are two main points to remember about Loading...'s gameplay: First, don't be greedy for lane control when playing Loading...; start actively pushing lanes from the 5th minute, even if the opponent gets a couple of last hits. The 6-minute functional rune spawn is an important node; supports may come to gank early, and the lane vision is almost gone—being killed once will wipe out all advantages. Pushing back the lane to jungle or controlling runes is safer and faster for farming, which applies to other mid lane heroes. Second, Loading... must not use his ultimate immediately. Loading... is not tanky; he just has high regeneration, and will still die to high burst damage. Treat yourself like Loading...—wait for teammates to provide control, then attack on the spot, and only use the ultimate to chase when the opponent tries to escape. This is the correct operation of an experienced Loading... player.
Third Place: Loading...
Loading... currently has two sets of gameplay, both reasonable and very strong. The first is the old idea: choose Misanthropy for Facets; although it was nerfed in 7.40, its burst damage is still sufficient. First item Loading..., then roam for single kills, playing like an assassin. The second is a new gameplay (also an ancient one): choose Chronoptic Nourishment for Facets, positioning as a mage-tank. The new Loading... strongly supports this gameplay. Objectively speaking, the current meta is more inclined to the first type, especially in high-ranked games and competitions. Loading... is indeed strong, but building Loading... as a mid laner is a bit slow. However, if you're not good at rhythm or not very familiar with Loading..., I strongly recommend the second type: build Loading... and choose Chronoptic Nourishment, then follow with Loading..., Loading..., Loading.... It's very tanky with high fault tolerance, easy to play, and without Loading..., you won't have extra ideas and will farm a lot more. In regular pub games, as long as you know how to farm, the win rate won't be too low.
Second Place: Loading...
Loading... is really not that difficult now. The current version is suitable for more lane control and less roaming in the early and mid-game, and Loading... is the hero who can take this to the extreme, positioning as a pseudo-mid but actual carry. You may not see it in competitions, but in pub games, if you farm fast, you will win. Loading...'s laning ability is not weak; as long as you prioritize attacking with auto + Loading... to deal with enemy remote creeps, the opponent will have a hard time. The first skill Loading... can deal full damage, and Loading... is unavoidable, sometimes even leading to single kills. When controlling runes, many people don't know that Loading...'s Loading... can absorb runes. Lay two Loading... on one side in advance, and place Loading... on the other side to take the rune. The opponent will either take the rune with damage or give up both runes. Therefore, you must level Loading... at level 2, otherwise you can't perform this operation when the 2-minute water rune spawns. Loading...'s itemization has been simplified now, with fewer active items and simpler skill releases. You can enable intelligent multi-unit casting in settings, no need to form groups, just box select all to release two sets of skills.
First Place: Loading...
Loading... is simply perfect for the current meta rhythm: stable lane control, fast farming, and can get kills with Loading..., while in the late game Loading..., Loading..., Loading... can instantly kill anyone at will. Some people say Loading...'s laning is too weak; it's true that Loading... has very low initial attack damage, but starting from level 2 with Loading..., last-hitting will not fall behind. Moreover, attack damage grows rapidly with level, and the health regeneration provided by Loading... makes most heroes' harassment ineffective. To play the laning phase well, level 1 is the most critical. When the first wave of creeps meets, first pull aggro, then use auto + Loading... to quickly kill the enemy remote creep, then continue to pull aggro to last hit—even if you pull to the tower, it doesn't matter as long as you don't get denied, and reaching level 2 normally is a great success. In terms of equipment, you can give up Loading... and switch to Loading.... Since Loading... no longer provides experience, its cost-effectiveness for Loading... is not high. Loading... not only helps you push towers quickly but also accelerates jungle farming and lane clearing, while providing the mana regeneration Loading... lacks in the early game. More important than equipment is the gameplay thinking: in the mid and late game, Loading... has various skills to push lanes without exposing himself: Loading..., Loading..., Loading..., Loading... and even Loading..., which are the most noble lane-pushing abilities and must be carried forward.
