7.41d Lycan's MMR Formula: Select, Attack, and Climb!
July 25th, 2026

Summon-focused
Lycan is an absolute stat monster in patch 7.41d. While everyone else is still stuck in "narrow-path, one-on-one sword-duel" laning, you have already grasped the "five wolves as one" truth and can deliver righteous 5v1 beatdowns. This guide covers the complete summon-focused
Lycan build—patch changes, skill build, item path, and in-game tempo—so you can master the formula and climb with ease.
I. Patch Changes: Why Summoner
Lycan
The key 7.41c changes pushed summoner
Lycan onto the throne of patch stat-monsters.
Feral Impulse health regen doubled: at level 1 the regen rose to 2/sec—a skill that only ever takes one level on lane—so the effect literally doubled, giving a steady 5.5/sec regen that makes
Lycan far comfier in the early lane.
Summon Wolves talents buffed: the level 10 and 15 talents that boost
Summon Wolves attack and HP both got number increases. Combined with the 7.41
Aghanim's Shard effect: summon count goes up by 3, plus a powerful active that grants evasion, attack speed, movement speed, and phasing movement. Stack all this together and summoner
Lycan is absurdly strong this patch.
II. Skill Build and Starting Items
Skill build: max
Summon Wolves first, then
Feral Impulse, and take one level of
Howl.
Starting items: absolutely bring a
Ring of Protection.
Lycan regenerates health insanely fast, so you need to raise the "quality" of that HP (i.e. armor) so the high regen actually translates into standing tankiness.
Ring of Protection later builds into
Assault Cuirass or
Vladmir's Offering for a smooth transition.
III. The Laning Stage: Three Uses of
Summon Wolves
Before your core items come online, how you use
Summon Wolves decides how comfortable your lane is. First, last-hit and deny alongside the hero: have
Summon Wolves contest last hits together with your hero to build an economic lead. Second, harass with your support: micro
Summon Wolves to help your support disrupt and wear down the enemy. Third, skip the lane by cutting creeps behind the tower: against truly unwinnable lanes, micro
Summon Wolves to drag creeps behind the tower and just "skip" the lane, letting your hero farm safely. However you do it,
Lycan's main body basically out-farms the opponent on last hits alone.
IV. Core Items and Tempo
Lane items to your first major:
Helm of Iron Will +
Helm of the Dominator, then upgrade into
Helm of the Overlord. The moment you finish
Helm of the Overlord, you can declare the laning stage over: kills and towers come in one fluid motion.
Mid-game core: the first two major items are basically fixed—
Helm of the Overlord +
Aghanim's Shard—and this build rarely changes.
Lycan is one of the few heroes who can take down
Aghanim's Shard alone, so his individual tempo is exceptional.
Late-game additions:
Assault Cuirass,
Black King Bar,
Nullifier,
Abyssal Blade. This route is both solid and versatile, covering teamfights, split-pushing, and sneaky tower pushes.
V. In-Game Tempo: Farm While You Fight, Clean Up Fights
Farming first:
Lycan's shapeshift ult is great for chasing, but he has no hard disable of his own, so he's not suited to initiate without teammates. The right tempo is: even when shapeshift is off cooldown, don't force a fight; hold the enemy jungle and keep farming—the farming speed of a top-tier
Lycan is not to be underestimated; once your team groups up, head over to clean up the aftermath; free prey that walks into you (loners, low-HP targets) you can of course pick off along the way.
Discipline: don't wander aimlessly; don't pop your ult to split-push towers (that wastes its core value); keep the farm-while-fighting tempo. Nail these three and
Lycan will perform strongly whether teamfighting or split-pushing/backdooring.
VI. Summary
Summoner
Lycan is a meta-answer hero who can decide the game's outcome through his own tempo. Especially in lower brackets, a skilled
Lycan can simply out-tempo the enemy into the ground and climb like it's nothing. Master this formulaic playstyle and the 7.41d
Lycan will be a reliable climbing weapon for you.
