7.41d Necrophos Core Guide: Strong Lane, Fast Scaling, Tanky Damage
July 24th, 2026

I. Why
Necrophos
When a hero is both fun to play and genuinely strong, what reason is there not to play them? This guide covers the formulaic playstyle of
Necrophos as a hot core Position 1 in 7.41d, explaining in the most straightforward terms how to play this hero.
As a Position 1 core,
Necrophos has been popular in competitive play and high-MMR pubs for nearly two months, and both his playstyle and item build are well established. He works as a carry for three reasons: strong laning that reliably creates an advantage; rapid progression through exceptional farming and limited early counterplay; and the ability to both absorb damage and deal plenty of it, with a sturdy frame, a satisfying ultimate execution, and excellent late-game teamfight presence.
II. Starting Items & Skill Build
Starting items:
Magic Wand +
Faerie Fire +
Iron Branch.
Skill build: max
Death Pulse, max
Heartstopper Aura second, and take one point in
Ghost Shroud at level 2 or 4.
III. Laning Cautions
Before learning
Ghost Shroud in the first two levels, watch your positioning and do not play too far forward. Getting caught and killed in one attempt is not worth the risk.
IV. Early Items
In the smoothest games, rush
Radiance straight after
Boots of Speed. Once you have
Radiance, your farming speed immediately doubles.
When the lane is difficult and even staying for last hits is a problem, do not skip transitional items such as
Bracer and
Infused Raindrops. Build up your fighting strength first, then consider the rest.
Why does
Necrophos suit Position 1? At 12 minutes, other carries are still timidly farming
Battle Fury and
Mjollnir in the safe lane or primary jungle, relying on their teammates' space. Meanwhile, you have already taken over the enemy triangle and are taking their resources. That is the value of
Necrophos: rapid farming and limited early counterplay.
V. Talent Choices
By default, take all the left-side talents. It is a reliable, straightforward setup with plenty of room for error.
VI. Core Three Items:
Radiance +
Aghanim's Shard +
Consecrated Wraps
There is little reason to hesitate over these three. Once they are complete, you enter a major power spike:
VII. Follow-up Items: Play It Safe
VIII. Full Six-Slot
Round out the build with
Shiva's Guard,
Heart of Tarrasque,
Aghanim's Scepter, and
Boots of Travel 2. You will farm quickly, enjoy finishing enemies with
Reaper's Scythe, and become very difficult to stop in late-game teamfights—this hero is genuinely fun to play.
IX. Closing
As a Position 1 core this patch,
Necrophos's straightforward game plan is simple and effective: win the lane → accelerate with
Radiance → hit a major three-item power spike → stay alive with
Black King Bar → finish with six slots. Whether you want to climb MMR or simply enjoy some games, this is one of the best carries to learn in the current patch.
