7.41d Riki Mid Guide: The Cheerful Midlane Assassin

I. Hero Identity

Today, let's talk about this patch's midlane assassin—Riki, one of the most enjoyable heroes I have played recently. As a midlaner, Riki focuses on securing farm and playing defensively early, then turns into a relentless hunter in the mid and late game. The flat damage from Tricks of the Trade, combined with the mobility of Blink Strike, makes him comfortable at both farming and fighting, while Cloak and Dagger grants bonus experience so he keeps up in levels.

II. Laning: Secure Farm, Then Counterattack

Core idea: focus on securing farm early. Do not force aggressive plays; instead, punish the enemy when they commit. Use Blink Strike to reliably secure the ranged creep.

Note: Tricks of the Trade now deals flat damage, which is very low at early levels. Since Riki needs to max Blink Strike first—the cooldown and cast range of Blink Strike are more important—do not rush to use Tricks of the Trade offensively in the early game.

Counterattack example—solo-killing Storm Spirit: fill up your Magic Stick (e.g. a ten-charge Magic Stick), wait for the enemy to initiate; when Storm Spirit opens with Electric Vortex, don't commit Tricks of the Trade right away, keep right-clicking; you must wait for Storm Spirit's next Static Remnant, then use Tricks of the Trade to dodge the Static Remnant; follow up with Blink Strike to chase and secure the solo kill.

III. Early Items and Gank Timing

With Orb of Corrosion + Power Treads + Magic Wand, you can begin your ganking tempo.

Gank approach: the cheerful little Riki naturally sneaks behind the enemy to deliver the fatal blow.

IV. Why Riki Comes Online So Quickly

Tricks of the Trade: although its late-game damage was reduced, its high flat damage early makes him stronger than before at both farming and fighting, allowing him to get active sooner.

Cloak and Dagger: grants bonus experience after kills, so farming while fighting in the early game keeps his level on pace.

High-level pressure: a high-level Riki puts immense pressure on the enemy. Heroes such as Storm Spirit can barely function without Black King Bar, and picking off a support along the way is effortless.

V. Talent Choices

Level 25: take the left side (basically fixed). Other talents have no fixed choice—one side adds damage, the other adds mobility and crowd control; pick based on the situation.

VI. Follow-up Items: Diffusal Blade Priority

Diffusal Blade has the highest priority. Afterwards, you can opt for Manta Style or go straight for Disperser.

In teamfights, first flank the backline and kill the supports, then turn back to help your team deal with the enemy frontline.

VII. Late-game Items

For later items, continue building tools that create a safe environment for dealing damage, such as Black King Bar, Nullifier, and Abyssal Blade.

As long as you can keep pursuing enemies on your own terms, Riki will never lack damage.
