Six Support Starting Item Builds

Here are several mainstream starting-item builds for supports in the current patch, along with the match scenarios each one is best suited for.

Build 1

The strongest starting build for supports that rely on right-click damage. Suitable heroes include Bane, Winter Wyvern, Phoenix, Witch Doctor, Silencer, Jakiro, and Mirana.

Start with one set of Tango; this gives the lane relatively little room for error. After picking up the bounty rune, buy one Healing Salve and one Enchanted Mango. That sustain is enough for the entire laning phase, and any spare gold can go toward another set of Tango.

Never buy Clarity during the laning phase. Enchanted Mango is far more cost-effective than Clarity.

Build 2

Start with two sets of Tango. Any ranged support can use this build in any matchup.

If the lane is extremely difficult—for example, against Axe, Necrophos, Underlord, Doom, or various summon-based heroes—buy another Healing Salve after picking up the bounty rune.

Build 3

A dedicated build for spell-harassing supports, suitable for Lich, Crystal Maiden, and Disruptor; Bane can occasionally use it as well.

After picking up the bounty rune, buy Healing Salve first, then save for Magic Stick or Boots of Speed.

Build 4

This build is designed for enemy lineups with heavy magical burst. If two enemy heroes both rely on short-cooldown spells, this is a good option.

Example pairings include Mars + Hoodwink, Tidehunter + Rubick, and Bristleback + Keeper of the Light. With experience, you will learn to recognize which lineups suit this build.

Melee supports without meaningful spell damage, such as Pudge and Spirit Breaker, should never use it. It is also not recommended against Lycan, Pudge, or Doom; stacking stat items is safer.

The standard sequence is to buy Healing Salve and Enchanted Mango after picking up the bounty rune.

Build 5

Start with Faerie Fire, one Sentry Ward, and Magic Stick. Use it when your lane is stronger and you do not need to block the large camp.

Only try this alternative after you fully understand the details of the previous builds.

Build 6

This build is for flexible players who like to upgrade Circlet later into Urn of Shadows, Bracer, or Null Talisman. It is high-risk, so consider carefully before trying it.
